If it were possible to hear her voice, we would hear the earth herself crying out in protest at the slaughter of innocents in Iraq – at the flimsy justification of the destruction of one group by another, at the action of Cain against Abel. For the earth carries our pain, just as we carry it. She carries the energies of destruction that we inflict upon each other, trying all the while to cleanse them from her heart.
